Some times you feel like a . . . . .

August 3rd, 2017 is National Grab Some Nuts Day

Nut or not a nut? Nuts are a one-seeded fruit that are popular salted snacks or common ingredients in recipes. But did you know that some of the most popular nuts are not technically nuts?

Walnuts are not a nut. Almonds are a nut. Peanuts are actually legumes. Acorns are nuts, but they taste good only to squirrels, it would seem. Test your knowledge of nuts on National Grab Some Nuts Day!

Okay get your mind out of the gutter!

The fact that some “nuts” are really not nuts per se should make people question labels and such. Peanuts for example advertise that they are “heart healthy” without really saying anything as to how many per serving, per day, etc. are “heart healthy”. They may be called “legumes” but the fact that they contain peanut oil as well as calories, they are very different from say many beans, etc.

The heartiest of nuts still require me to eat multiple pounds to get the protein I find in one good steak. Then there’s the trace minerals. That said, nuts are good & I feel sorry for those allergic to them.

Macadamia nuts make for a really nice breading enhancement on chicken pork or fish. walnuts work well on pork they don’t work so well with fish & you can use just about anything with chicken. Here’s a good one.
        .
Take a nice fillet of white fish… Haddock.
take a handful of macadamia or almond & 2-3 tbsp of instant mashed potatoes, grind them together in a food processor with a pinch of salt & pepper.
give your fish an egg wash & then toss in a bag with this mix & coat well.
        fry.
